You would think that someone who is an acclaimed producer, award-winning artist, and pioneer in visual performance would be pretty well known; especially when he wears a giant mouse helmet. His beats are transcending, his attitude is no-bullshit, and his vision is big. So why haven’t you heard of Deadmau5? Because he appeared on the Dance music scene before you could blink.

Deadmau5, actually named Joel Zimmerman, hails from Toronto and makes a progressive mix of House and Trance beats, with interesting samples and nuances of minimalist and Tech House. The result is an infectious and comfortable sound that still challenges the listener to open up to a new approach. This is most recognized by fellow DJs and producers. In DJ Magazine’s 2007 top 100 DJs article, both the winner, Armin Van Buuren, and the runner-up, Tiësto, named him Producer of the Year for 2007.

After that, the awards just flowed in. He received the Best Dance Recording two years in a row from the Juno awards, and DJmag.com’s 2008 Top DJs Poll put him at number 11 and tied him with Infected Mushroom for the title of Highest New Entry. Among other awards, Beatport Magazine named him Best Electro House artist and Best Progressive House artist TWO years in a row, for 2008 and 2009. He has won the most Beatport Mag Awards and subsequently was named “Greatest House DJ Ever” in 2008 and again in 2009.

All this doesn’t seem to be getting to his huge mouse head. Deamau5 is currently on tour (he just finished up in the States and is now trekking through Europe) but still takes time out to update his blog with musings on quality of digital files and fellow artists in the business. He also recently developed an App for the iPhone where you can remix his own tracks with DJ software. You’ll see his next release on Virgin/EMI records, to where he just signed. In any case, this mouse is no longer scurrying in the shadows.

Deadmau5 hard at work!
