Have You Seen Molly? Madonna A Drug Pusher?

Have You Seen Molly? Madonna A Drug Pusher?

If you haven’t heard by now, Madonna “finally made it to the Ultra Music Festival” as she said while on stage this past weekend. Now, I love Madonna personally and she isn’t bullshitting when she says she’s been into ‘Electronic dance music” since her career began. So, purists, please, you don’t have to like her but recognize, she is a dance artist at heart, always has been. But now, I have to say, even I take issue with what she said right before introducing Avicii.

“Have you seen Molly?” she asked the crowd of thousands which is apparently a reference to MDNA, you might be more familiar with its street name, Extasy.

Now, I’m all for pushing the envelope and I never took issue with Madonna for her sexual openness or even burning crosses, but promoting drugs? Of course, Madonna must’ve known she’d get some flack for it, and apparently she doesn’t care, her album is actually named MDNA. But I was hoping it was an acronym for something, a tongue in cheek type of joke. But to be asking kids if they are on drugs? I’m not so sure about that.

See, dance music culture will forever be associated with drugs; from the cocaine fueled Disco nights of Studio 54 to underground raves, society has always focused on this very real but still small part of our scene. With electronic music now mainstream, the last thing we need is anyone, let alone someone of Madonna’s stature, reminding everyone else of this history. I sure as hell aint saying we should pretend it doesn’t exist. Hell no. I actually applaud the organizers of these big events, at least most of them, for their strong stance against drugs, but straight up advocating it is something else.

Is Madonna so far removed from the lives of real people she thinks she was just making an innocent reference to what the kids “are into these days” like if it was a energy drink? What gets me is that she’s a mom now and her daughter is fast approaching the age where she’ll be facing the decision to pop a pill or two before heading out to a party herself. And I’m sure her Majesty wouldn’t appreciate it if her daughters favorite pop icon condoned it.

What do you think? Innocent fun or something that should be taken serious? Let us know in the comments, FB comments, and via Twitter!

UPDATE:

The ever outspoken Deadmau5 apparently felt the same way we did about Madonna’s comments and wrote about it, and she replied via Twitter (didn’t she say she was only going to be on Twitter for one day?). This is the exchange:

Madonna: “From one mouse to another. I don’t support drug use and I never have. I was referring to the song called ‘Have You Seen Molly’ written by my friend Cedric Gervais who I almost worked with on my last album.”

Deadmau5: “Fair enough, I was just voicing my concerns as i usually do. +1 respect for clearing it up personally.”

Madonna: “Communication is always best. You should have called me first, we could have cleared it up ‘privately’ 😉 See you on the road.”

Deadmau5: “Sure. Regardless, just be a little more aware of what you *should* represent at EDM events, and I’ll watch my mouth.”

Like I said, I am a fan of Madonna, but I don’t buy this excuse.
