WEEKEND MIX 6.10.11: WEPA! PR PARADE THROW DOWN

WEEKEND MIX 6.10.11: WEPA! PR PARADE THROW DOWN

Of course, these shop owners are over exaggerating, the only thing getting ransacked are the streets themselves. But what do you expect when you have over a million, yes, millions of happy and proud ‘Boricuas’ celebrating their pride in the annual festival that is the Puerto Rican day parade?!

One thing you can bet on during this festive weekend, which begins with the 116th Street festival in Spanish Harlem on Saturday, is hearing a lot of music. You will hear Dance music such as House and some Freestyle, and of course the music that will be most prominent is Salsa. At nite however, after the streets have cleared and the clubs are packed, it’s Hip hop and Reggaeton that are going to get the bodies moving! We have two mixes to help you get yourself ready for the hot and crazy weekend ahead.

First up is Puerto Rican DJ and New York native DJ Tijeras, that’s DJ Scissors for your non Puerto Rican speaking people out there. And it’s a very apt name for this gato. DJ Tijeras has been cutting it up in the New York Latin underground scene for the last few years, making a name for himself by tearing up dance floors with the hottest tracks and his master skills. Press play and prepare to be cut up by DJ Tijeras!

Lastly, we have DJ Victor Salterini, which if you know your Latin, you can already tell Salterini doesn’t sound like a Puerto Rican name. Well, he isn’t. Salterini is from Venezuela via Miami, and he loves Reggaeton and understandably, Latin music in general! Salterini’s mix features plenty of Reggaeton, but he manages to swiftly throw in a mix of varied Latin flavors, and not just the hits tearing up the radio, but a nice collection of some smooth, yet moving vibes; Salterini shows he has an understanding and appreciation of many genres. And for this he gets the nod! Vaya mano!

Ok, you’re ready to embark on an urban Puerto Rican adventure for the Weekend? With these two mixes, at least your ears will be ready. Just keep away from the stores on the avenues!
