WEEKENDMIX 12.28.12: 2012 WRAP-UP

WEEKENDMIX 12.28.12: 2012 WRAP-UP

It is December 28, which, if you believed the Mayans, is 7 days after the world was supposed to have ended. It didn’t. But don’t worry, as 2012 nears its end, your apocalyptic ending is still on course. Why, there’s the fiscal cliff to worry about, the melting polar ice caps and its effect on the planets water levels which will undoubtedly cause more massive storms like Hurricane Sandy. Oh, and now we have Zombies to worry about. Yeah, you’re covered.

Ok enough end of the world talk. We’re about to turn the page on 2012 and it’s time to get on with the future – right after we recap the year that was of course.

I don’t know about you, but all in all, I think it was a good year for dance music and DJs, and nitelife in general. Like I have said before, when times are tough, people dance, and well, times are tough. 2012 sure was a very interesting year all around, and in our world of music, where we go to get away from the problems of the outside world, it was no different.

We’re not sure how we feel about this -it’s surely a topic for another day, but EDM is an official term now, as familiar as CIA, FBI, and CNN. Dance music festivals, growing year after year in every way, simply exploded this year. There are more new dance centric festivals now then one shake a glow stick at. And whether being tapped by a mainstream act or making new stars out of underground ones, Dance music further embedded itself into mainstream culture outside of the clubs and has become a mainstay in the Billboard charts. This resulted in a moment I’m sure some would rather forget but, we can’t forget that even the Grammys put the spotlite on Dance music this year.

Not everything was rosy of course. This was also the year where club owners began acting like dictators and began ejecting DJs from the DJ booth like it was the in thing to do. There was also Deadmau5 talking more negative smack about DJ culture then its enemies. This of course led to some heated debates on the Internets especially Twitter, where DJ battles exploded like middle school girls fighting in the bathroom. And did I mention that EDM term and the Grammys thing already?

All jokes aside, let’s not forget that we lost a few friends along the way. We lost some great influences on dance music and DJ culture. Lives were also lost at some of these festivals we speak of. We know we are in the business of partying, of good times, and banging beats, but we are dealing with real people and no matter how loud the music, we can’t escape death.

Ok, so, it’s time to wrap up. We leave you with some of the best WeekendMix’s of the past 12 months. We’re sure you’ll pump them loudly as you go about making your last minute preparations and/or end of the year rituals -or perhaps your staying in and chilling at home with your loved ones. Whatever you do, do take time to reflect, honor those who are not with us any longer, and prepare for what tomorrow holds.

Happy New Year party people!
