DJ OF THE WEEK 6.27.11: SASCHA FUNKE
Born in a divided Germany, before the wall came down, Sascha was a fan of the Electronic sounds sweeping through his homeland and continent, as well as the House music that was pouring in from across the pond, from an early age. It’s hard to say whether growing up during this period had an influence on the sound he would develop later on as a DJ, but where many of his fellow countrymen went with the driving and pounding sounds of Techno, his style is more sublime and gentle. Despite his more subdued style, Sascha somehow still manages to incorporate that hard, almost industrial feel that is so identified with his country in his music; this juxtaposition is what makes Sascha so appealing.
Ever since that wall came down, Sascha has been working his way towards DJ super-stardom. First, he began by putting together parties in East Berlin and visiting some of the cities deepest underground clubs. Next he moved onto spinning records himself in the mid nineties. He then moved on to producing records and soon after founded his own label. In 1999, he dropped his first productions ‘Campus’ and ‘Safety First,’ on Kompakt.
Fast forward a decade and Sascha is an established DJ, Producer, and remixer, and the thing is, he’s just getting started. Party people the world over are becoming familiar with his distinctive sound, and whether they like the hard sounds of Techno or those of some deep House, they are all asking for more.
