DJ OF THE WEEK 6.20.11: CHEZ DAMIER

For those who follow Electronic music, and in particular, House music the name Chez Damier is a familiar one. Born Anthony Pearson, he began by working at a Chicago record store when he was only 13. There he befriended the music lovers, fans, and industry insiders of the growing underground sounds and culture we would come to know as House, and they would take young Pearson along. It was in this world that Pearson fell in love with the scene, the music, the culture, and became Chez.

Chez was one of the original two founders of The Music Institute a legendary Detroit club in the hey day of House music history. He played an integral part managing Kevin Saunderson’s KMS studio and label, only to follow that up by founding his own label, Prescription Records and it’s sub label Balance, with another significant figure of the genre, Ron Trent. There have also been the genre defining hits, such as ‘The Wanderer,’ ‘I Remember Dance, ‘Morning Factory,’ ‘The Choice,’ ‘I Never Knew Love,’ ‘Sometimes I Feel Like,’ ‘Be My,’ ‘Can You Feel It,’ the list goes on and on and on.

Despite the fact that he took an extended break from the entire scene, from 1997 to 2004, his influence remained. And upon his return he picked up right where he left off, dropping the same types of quality and progressive tracks we had grown to expect from him such as ‘Love is the Message,’ ‘A Work In Progress,’ and more. He also remains busy in the studio remixing, writing and arranging, even laying down vocals. And then there is the DJing. Yes, Chez travels the globe continuing to spin his deep House grooves for the dancing party people of the world. Haven’t heard him live? Then add it to your bucket list. In the meantime, check out the following mix, we’re sure no matter what you call him, DJ, Producer, singer, songwriter, or cultural icon, you will agree, one title Chez is deserving of, is that of legend.
