DJ OF THE WEEK 10.11.10: DEEP DISH

Deep Dish is Ali “Dubfire” Shirazinia and Sharam Tayebi, two Iranian Americans based in Washington D.C. The duo met by chance when they were double booked to spin at a club in the same time slot.

Thanks to that chance encounter, they have given music lovers of the world some memorable music over the 15 years they have been together. First, there was one of their earliest tunes, ‘Chocolate City (Love Songs)’ followed up by ‘High Frequency’ and ‘Dreams,’ and a few others. They also began to remix around this time with ‘Don’t Turn Your Back On Me’ and ‘Soul Searching’ two of their most memorable. Their efforts quickly caught the attention of a major heavyweight, Danny Tenaglia who put out their 1995 compilation mix, ‘Penetrate.’

The pair kept at it producing, remixing, and essentially establishing their voice when in 1998, they released their seminal album ‘Junk Science.’ Featuring classics such as ‘The Future of the Future,’ ‘Stranded,’ and the title track ‘Junk Science,’ it was the surprise album of the year and put them on the world map. A map they’ve been rocking ever since.

It is hard to believe it has been 12 years since the release of ‘Junk Science,’ and although the duo has only released one other album ‘George Is On,’ in 2005, they have stayed busy remixing for everyone under the sun. Janet Jackson, Pet Shop Boys, Justin Timberlake, DJ Rap, Dido, Madonna, these are just some of the names of those who have come knocking for the duo’s golden touch. Both members have worked on plenty of solo projects as well. Both have their own extensive lists of remix and compilation credits and Dubfire launched his own record label, SCI + TEC in 2007 while Sharam released his own album ‘Get Wild’ in 2009. Of course, the pair keeps their DJ skills sharp by continuing to spin records all over the world; and this time, the double booking is on purpose.
