DJ OF THE WEEK 10.3.11: 2 MANY DJS
Before it was the “it” thing to do, brothers David Dewaele and Stephen Dewaele were creating mash-ups of music you’d never guess hearing on the same nite let alone on the same track, and all for fun. Their bootlegs were so good they managed to capture the attention of London’s underground scene; before they knew it they were spinning their eclectic mixes at some of the towns hippest clubs and eventually on the radio on stations such as Xfm and BBC Radio 1.
These two brothers are now known as 2 Many DJs, one of the most eccentric DJ duos in the game. 2 Many DJs have not let up since first making a name for themselves – aside from working their magic on the scene by constantly touring they have released a collection of official and unofficial remixes, CD mixes ,and more. Than there is ‘As Heard on Radio Soulwax Pt. 2’.
As Heard on Radio Soulwax Pt. 2 is a very important album, one, because one it’s crazy and two because it’s brilliant. I mean, how else would you describe an album that is basically a lesson in pop music culture and shows just how far a DJ can go? Mixing the Peter Gunn theme with Basement Jaxx’s “Where’s Your Head At”? Or Polyester, Sly and the Family Stone, and Ready for the World, or Dolly Parton with Röyksopp, plenty of DJs have mashed up unlikely songs and genres and what not, but only 2 Many DJs have gone to such an extreme -there are 45 tracks on the album and it would have been more if not for the fact they couldn’t get the rights to the rest.
If you want to catch 2 Many DJs live, you’d have more luck going over seas, as their stateside appearances are few and far in between, but it would be more than worth the trip. Just don’t worry if you hear some weird country music in their DJ sets, 2 Many DJs will make sure it all comes together brilliantly crazy.
