DJ OF THE WEEK 10.17.11: BORIS

Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, Boris Inzhin’s family brought him to the Big Apple when he was just three years old. As a young man growing up in New York he fell in love with the thumping sounds of Electronic music, in particular the four to the floor sounds of House music. He knew then exactly what he wanted to do, no matter how long it would take, no matter how hard the road, Boris was determined to be a DJ.

Straight out of high school, Boris enrolled in audio school, the Institute of Audio Research while simultaneously hitting the grind stone looking for any venue that would give him a chance to spin records. He graduated from IAR in 93’ and soon after scored his first gig at a club called Tilt. Boris’ talents quickly began to open doors for him and within a few short years was holding it down at some of the best clubs in 1990’s New York, such as Limelight, Roxy, Carbon, Exit, The Grand, Supper Club, Sound Factory, and more.

Boris’ talents aren’t only limited to the DJ booth, he teamed up with Doug Beck another New York DJ and before the 20th century had come to a close, the two had established themselves as legitimate producers working with the likes of Janet Jackson, Taylor Dane, Information Society, Britney Spears, Cyndi Lauper, Salt-n-Pepa, Angie Martinez, and many more.

Enter the 21st century and Boris has taken off. His studio work has continued but his work in the DJ booth has exploded! In 2004 he landed a residency at super club Crobar and after that club closed its doors in 2010 he moved to Pacha. In the DJ world, where scoring a residency at a major club is the creme dela creme of a DJs dreams, Boris has held more than most. Aside from the aforementioned New York super clubs, he’s also held a residencies at Therapy in Rhose Island, and at Boston’s Rise, Miami’s own super club Space, and Empire in Las Vegas. Of course, there are his gigs in international super clubs such as Toronto’s Lucid and Montreal’s Stereo, as well as Moscow’s Jet Set club and Tokyo’s Coda.

If you are in need of adding some of Boris’ work to your collection, start with his 2006 hit mix CD “Believe,” it is probably the one that garnered him the most fans outside of his work in the clubs, and it will surely give you an idea of the thumping and driving drums that he is known for. In the meantime, take a listen to the following mix full of Boris’ thumping and driving beats that will surely take you on a great trip, and one much more comfortable than flying 9 hours to Russia!
