DJ OF THE WEEK 3.29.10: BLACK COFFEE
After spending a week in Miami for the Winter Music Conference and having heard countless DJs, new jacks and veterans alike, representing almost every genre imaginable under the Strobelite sun of the Dance music world, it can be pretty difficult selecting a DJ of the Week, or not.
Fact is, this year my choice was pretty much an easy one. His name has been rising steadily and at this year’s conference, it seems to only have spread from mouth to mouth like a bad cold. The parties at which he rocked the tables were the talk of the town, his sets left people drenched in sweat, their bodies aching, and their minds somehow changed. Like his namesake, he really woke people up, and he put mama Africa back on the map, for that, and his all around coolness, we nominate Black Coffee as this week’s DJ of The Week!
Representing Johannesburg, South Africa, Black Coffee brings a soulful and gritty feel to his sets that essentially take you back to the motherland in many ways. Black Coffee simply doesn’t allow you to stay still, he packs his sets with grooves so deep, rhythms so sweet, and beats so unrelenting that you’ll find yourself dancing around the bonfire in your mind in no time. How Black Coffee manages to inject a completely new feel and revive the whole scene with his fresh approach is something we can all learn from. House music might have been born in New York and Chicago, but that beat was born in Africa a long time ago and Black Coffee is here to show us exactly how it’s done.
