DJ OF THE WEEK 5.3.10: JAZZY JAY
Don’t you just hate, when someone is recognized for their good works after they have passed on? It happens way too often, and all of us are to blame. We take for granted what we have, failing to recognize, the true accomplishments and value of the gifted ones among us. One DJ, we don’t want to do that with is the original cut creator, DJ Jazzy Jay.
As one of the pioneers of Hip Hop culture, Jazzy Jay has been an integral part in the development of Hip Hop from a neighborhood sound to a global movement. He started off as a student of the game from the beginning, serving under the tutelage of Afrika Bambaataa and the Universal Zulu Nation. Before long, the student was a teacher, teaching a generation of youngins just what a Hip Hop DJ is. From when he was spinning at legendary nite spots such as Danceteria, the Roxy, Negril, to today where you can catch him spinning all over the world, Jazzy Jay is the epitome of what a Hip Hop DJ should be.
Listening to Jazzy Jay spin is like getting a lesson on Hip Hopology, he spins top shelf Hip Hop classics mixed with the current floor bangers, all the while hyping the crowd with his MC skills, a lost art form indeed for a lot of today’s bedroom jocks. Over the years, he has been a record label owner, a producer, a spokesman, and like Hip Hop, he don’t stop. These days you can catch him rocking jams all over the world and online, where he keeps up with the latest social networks to reach out and communicate with his legions of fans. And thank God for that, we wouldn’t want to miss the party that is Jazzy Jay!
