WEEKEND MIX 9.30.11: FREE SPIRIT FEST – BREAKNECK SESSION
I don’t know much about The Free Spirit Charity Festival held just a few weeks ago during the first weekend of September in Buckinghamshire, England, except that it was supposed to raise funds for various charities and featured a slew of local performers and DJs, and well, not much else. Fact is their marketing leading to the event, and even the slew of images and stories that usually find their way online after such an event are (except for their official site and one album I found on FB) pretty hard to come by. But this mix I came across, recorded at this mysterious micro fest? Well, it sounds pretty damn good!
I don’t know, maybe it’s the hippy name of the festival, or the home-grown feel of the entire affair (or it’s marketing really, I didn’t actually attend), or that we are fans of the DJ behind the mix, Neil Thompson aka Breakneck speed, who has been featured in the WeekendMix previously, but this set made me feel pretty good.
The beats are straight up unrelenting, not many vocals to sing along to here, just more of that breakbeat electronic goodness. The feel however is lighthearted; even during its deepest parts, you feel more like you should be dancing in a sunny field much like where the festival was held, than in a dark dance floor at your local club. Don’t be fooled though, the music is straight and legitimate, in your face EDM.
Hopefully, this Free Spirit Charity Festival really did help raise some funds for some real charities, and will continue to do so successfully in the future, in the meantime, I am confident we will all benefit from pressing play on the following mix!
