DJ OF THE WEEK 1.14.13: SOLOMUN

Mladen Solomun, simply known as Solomun, has been tearing up the underground from his home base in Germany for the last few years. 2012 was no different, in fact, it was probably one of his biggest years yet.

One of his first remixes of the year was titled, Lucky Star, and though I’m sure there was a bit of luck somewhere in there, fact is, it is Solomun’s hard work that has made him a star. List the songs Solomun had his hands in throughout the year and I’m sure you’ve heard and are a fan of many of them, or you will be. Press play on remixes such as ‘A Love Bazaar’, ‘Around,’ ‘Voyage,’ ‘Let’s Go Back,’ or any of his own productions such as ‘International Hustle,’ ‘Deadman,’ ‘He Is Watching You,’ ‘Lambada,’ and ‘Kackvogel,’ or better yet, listen to just one of his mix sets and you’ll immediately be hooked on the Croatian DJ. The industry sure is.

For years now, Solomun has been spoiling us with his impeccable offerings, such as one of the best albums of 2009 hands down, his debut album ‘Dance Baby’. Year in and year out, you can all but guarantee that one (or many) of his productions will be on the favorites lists of those paying attention to the underground. In 2012, he took home a Special Award for Producer of the Year in the Ibiza DJ Awards and was a runner up in the Deep House category. In fact, it was such a good year, he claims he needs a two month break just to recover from it.

Hopefully, Solomun will cut this supposed two month furlough short, better yet, maybe it‘s all a joke. We hope so. Actually, come to think of it, Solomun can’t possibly be going anywhere; he simply has too much work to do to make sure the party people of the world continue receiving their proper grooves.

It’s not like he’s going to walk away from running the label he co-founded, Diynamic Music, which over the last five years has been putting out some distinctive and top quality sounds by artists such as Stimming, HOSH, Ost & Kjex, Uner, David August, Adriatique, and Hunter/Game, among others. We also highly doubt he is going to leave the responsibility of running one of Germany’s hottest clubs, EGO, which he so happens to own, to someone else. He also needs to hold the fort down on his radio show and keep building up Diynamic’s sister label, 2DIY4, which is all but a year and a half old.

Nah, Solomun, tell us you’re pulling our leg (or is it legs). Tell us you’re going to continue giving us more of that four to the floor House layered with that unforgivingly hypnotic texture that forms our dreams. That other worldly goodness that causes us to lose ourselves only to wake up sweating on a dance floor. Like your sets, take us away from all the bs we have to deal with in our daily lives, and help us forget. So don’t go; show the world just how beautiful House music is. We need you in 2013.

Just in case, we’re giving both current and future Solomun fans two mixes to hold us over.
