DJ OF THE WEEK 8.2.10: MARK FARINA

Unless you know your House music history, Mark Farina, is quite possibly one of those DJ’s whose name you’ve probably heard a thousand times and whose productions you may be more familiar with than you even realize, yet remains somewhat of an obscure figure. Well, time to recognize.

Mark Farina has been in the midst of it all since House first started to make a name for itself in Chicago’s underground club scene in the early to mid 80’s. It was during this time that the then young kid began buying records with whatever money he had and spinning records in his childhood home. It was during one of these record buying adventures that he met with legendary DJ Derrick Carter, who gave him some advice and extended his hand in friendship. This was a friendship that helped steer Farina into a positive direction that eventually lead him out of his parent’s house to DJing at some of the world’s best clubs.

Since that fateful day those many years ago, Farina has established himself as an incredible DJ with a unique sound all his own, one of the finest House DJ’s in the world with a loyal following, and the premier go to DJ for mixed (compilation) CD’s in the industry.

Although he is highly praised for his deep House sets, Farina hasn’t stuck strictly to the deep Chicago House sound, he is also known for his love of Funk, Hip Hop, Disco, Jazz, and more; all which he throws in the mix and keeps the crowds moving. In fact, Farina is credited with having released, along with Chris Nazuka, the first Ambient House record, titled “Mood,” it helped establish Farina’s name in the scene as someone to watch out for.

Farina’s love for more down tempo vibes laced with Hip Hop beats, back then known as Acid Jazz, lead him to release his first of countless mixed compilations, “Mushroom Jazz (1-6).” Afterwards, came “Seasons,” and hits including “Mood,” Time To Jack,” “Dream Machine,” and more.

As a DJ, Farina has traveled the world countless times over and to crowds that would make that young kid spinning records in his parent’s house giddy with excitement and he has been recognized for his skills behind the tables by being listed as a top DJ in lists by URB, BPM, Muzik magazines.

If after all this you still don’t know who Mark Farina is, then just know this, he is that kid who had a dream and followed it, who spins for the love, not the fame and fortune, and someone who brings us joy simply because of the joy he derives from it. Or you could just listen to the following mix for the next hour and 46 minutes. We think you’ll have a new found appreciation for him when your done.

If you are in New York or any where nearby on the East Coast, make sure to go see Mark Farina LIVE at Sullivan Room Friday, August 7, 2010!!
